Sang-Yun Kwen is a native of Korea. She graduated from Seoul National University in 1990 earning her undergraduate degree in vocal music. Awarded a scholarship to study opera at the famed Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, Sang-Yun graduated with honors in June 1997. She received the Merit Prize (given to only one student a year) for the most outstanding performance in Graduate School. While in Salzburg, she was the soloist in numerous performances of Masses by Mozart in the surrounding area. She also received a diploma from the Mozarteum in Art Song and Oratorio in June 1994. While at the Mozarteum, she performed Gilda, Despina, Olympia, Zerbinetta, Anna, Blonde, Queen of the Night, and Oscar.
While in Austria, Ms. Kwen was engaged as a guest artist for the opera companies of Linz and Lambach. She was also engaged as a soloist for ORF -Saal in Vienna. Upon coming to the United States Sang-Yun settled in Denver and won the Denver Lyric Guild Competition. From 1999-2000 she was a Young Artist with Opera Colorado. She and her husband then moved to Dayton, Ohio and Sang-Yun sang in the ensemble for Dayton Opera for a short season. Their residence now is located in Chicago. She has given recitals in Denver, Dayton, Seattle, and Chicago. A Mozart program tour took her throughout the USA in August 1996 to benefit the children of Yugoslavia.She served as music director at Calvary Church of Assembly of God and currently serves as soloist at the Canaan Presbyterian Church.
